ABSTRACT

The participants in this study were 20-49 years old rural childbearing age people who received the National Free Preconception Health Examination Project (NFPHEP) in Yunnan Province during 2013 to 2019. The proportion of ABO and RhD blood groups among different ethnic groups and different areas were calculated. The proportion of 2 748 131 participants with blood group A phenotype was highest (32.60%), followed by O (30.60%), B (27.33%) and AB (9.47%). In the RhD blood system, the proportion of the RhD positivity (RhD+) and RhD negativity (RhD-) group were 99.29% and 0.71% respectively. The proportions blood groups were significantly different among ethnic groups and areas (all P<0.001). Among 18 ethnic groups with more than 3 000 participants, Yao (42.75%), Bouyei (40.58%) and Dai (40.37%) ethnic groups had higher proportion of blood group O phenotype than other ethnic groups. Wa ethnic groups had highest proportion of the A (40.15%) and AB phenotypes (11.23%). Miao ethnic group (34.70%) and Lahu ethnic group (34.42%) had higher proportion of blood group B phenotype than other ethnic groups. Wa ethnic group had the highest proportion of RhD-group (1.88%). In all 16 prefectures of Yunnan, the proportion of blood group O phenotype was highest in Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture (40.27%). Baoshan city (36.39%), Lincang city (36.22%) and Dali Bai autonomous prefecture (36.06%) had higher proportion of blood group A phenotype than other regions. Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (30.83%) and Qujing city (30.48%) had higher proportion of blood group B phenotype than other areas, while Zhaotong city had a highest proportion of blood group AB phenotype (11.19%). The proportion of RhD-group was highest in Honghe hani and Yi nationality autonomous prefecture(1.37%). The A RhD+(39.36%), A RhD-(0.78%), AB RhD+(11.03%), AB RhD-(0.20%) and O RhD-(0.48%) blood groups were higher proportion in Wa ethnic group than in other ethnic groups (P<0.001).

ABSTRACT

‍Traditionally, the progression from compensated liver cirrhosis to decompensated liver cirrhosis has been considered an irreversible point in the natural history of the disease; however, with the suppression of underlying etiology, cure, and disease regression, this view is challenged by an increasing number of new evidence, and the idea of “recompensation of liver cirrhosis” is gradually being accepted. In recent years, scholars in China and globally have been exploring the specific definition of recompensation of liver cirrhosis and the clinical features of patients. By summarizing the recent studies on recompensation of liver cirrhosis in China and globally, integrating existing views, and analyzing related research evidence, this article points out the main challenges in the field of recompensation at this stage, including the lack of in-depth clinical and basic research, the need to define recompensation in the context of NAFLD, and related ethical issues, in order to provide new directions for future research in this field.

ABSTRACT

Staphylococcus epidermidis can exhibit both protective and opportunistic pathogenic effects on the skin: on the one hand, it suppresses pathogenic bacteria and inflammation, assists the innate immune system of the skin, and maintains homeostasis of skin microenvironment; on the other hand, it exhibits pathogenic potential. How Staphylococcus epidermidis affects human skin conditions depends not only on itself, but also on the communication among it, the host immune system, other microorganisms and environment factors. The balance of this interaction is the symbiotic homeostasis of Staphylococcus epidermidis, and when the homeostasis is disrupted, a variety of skin diseases such as acne vulgaris, atopic dermatitis, rosacea and melanoma can occur. Factors affecting the symbiotic homeostasis of Staphylococcus epidermidis include environmental conditions such as temperature, oxygen content and nutrition, antibiotics, the number of other microorganisms, microecological diversity, etc. This review summarizes recent research progress in symbiotic homeostasis of Staphylococcus epidermidis.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To compare effect of internal fixation of ribs assisted by complete thoracoscopy and thoracotomy for flail chest. Methods:A retrospective cohort study was used to analyze the clinical data of 86 patients with flail chest treated at No.2 Hospital of Nanping City and 900th Hospital of Joint Logistics Support Force between January 2019 and December 2020, including 58 males and 28 females; aged 25-69 years [(42.9±9.5)years]. A total of 45 patients underwent internal fixation of ribs assisted by complete thoracoscopy (thoracoscopy group), and 41 patients by thoracotomy (thoracotomy group). The operation time, number of fixed ribs, intraoperative blood loss, ventilation time, postoperative length of hospital stay, hemodynamic indicators [partial pressure of oxygen (PaO 2), partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO 2), oxygenation index (PaO 2/FiO 2)] before surgery and at 1 day after surgery, respiratory function [forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), maximal voluntary ventilation (MVV)] at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after surgery and postoperative complications were compared between the two groups. Results:All patients were followed up for 12-18 months [(14.1±1.9)months]. Thoracoscopy group showed prolonged operation time [(139.5±36.4)minutes vs. (114.8±32.5)minutes], reduced intraoperative blood loss [(124.6±42.4)ml vs. (198.6±62.6)ml] as well as shortened ventilation time [(4.0±1.1)days vs. (6.7±1.6)days] and postoperative length of hospital stay [(14.9±2.4)days vs. (17.9±3.7)days] when compared with thoracotomy group (all P<0.01). There was no statistical significance in the number of fixed ribs between the two groups ( P>0.05). There were no statistical differences in PaO 2, PaCO 2 or PaO 2/FiO 2 between the two groups before surgery (all P>0.05). At day 1 after surgery, the PaO 2 and PaO 2/FiO 2 in thoracoscopy group were (86.2±5.4)mmHg and 321.4±36.1, higher than (80.1±6.2)mmHg and 286.0±29.3 in thoracotomy group (all P<0.01); the PaCO 2 was (37.4±2.4)mmHg in thoracoscopy group, lower than (40.0±3.1)mmHg in thoracotomy group ( P<0.01). At 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months after surgery, the FVC was (75.5±10.9)%, (84.5±10.5)%, (93.1±12.8)% and (102.6±17.5)% in thoracoscopy group, higher than (69.2±9.9)%, (78.3±8.9)%, (86.2±10.4)% and (92.4±14.8)% in thoracotomy group; the FEV1 was (76.9±9.3)%, (88.4±12.9)%, (92.4±13.9)% and (98.5±10.6)% in thoracoscopy group, higher than (72.9±8.5)%, (82.8±11.4)%, (86.4±12.7)% and (93.5±11.9)% in thoracotomy group; the MVV was (78.3±13.4)L/min, (87.5±13.5)L/min, (94.6±14.7)L/min and (100.1±11.9)L/min in thoracoscopy group, higher than (72.5±11.6)L/min, (80.5±12.7)L/min, (86.5±13.5)L/min and (92.8±10.3)L/min in thoracotomy group (all P<0.05). There were no thoracic deformities in the two groups after surgery. There was no statistical significance in incision infection rate between the two groups ( P>0.05). The incidence rate of pulmonary infection, atelectasis and pleural effusion was 11.1% (5/45), 6.7% (3/45) and 11.1% (5/45) in thoracoscopy group, lower than 29.3% (12/41), 24.4% (10/41) and 31.7% (13/41) in thoracotomy group (all P<0.05). Conclusion:Although internal fixation of ribs with complete thoracoscopy has longer surgical time than thoracotomy in the treatment of flail chest, it can decrease intraoperative blood loss, ventilation time and length of hospital stay and is more conducive to improving the respiratory function and reducing complication rate.

ABSTRACT

Central precocious puberty (CPP) is a common pediatric endocrine disease caused by premature activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, featured by rapid development of internal and external reproductive organs and secondary sexual characteristics in girls before age 8 and boys before age 9.The gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogue (GnRHa) is the first choice for the treatment of CPP.Currently, 3.75 mg/ month sustained -release short-acting dosage form (1M depot formulations) is the most commonly used in China. The development of long-acting dosage form will reduce injection times and clinic visits. At present, the 3-month long-acting dosage form (11.25 mg 3M depot formulations) of Leprorelin microsphere has been approved in China. However, clinical practice experience of 3-month Leuprorelin acetate depot formulations is lacking in China. Therefore, in this paper, existing clinical evidence for this dosage form was reviewed to provide evidence-based medicine support for its clinical application.

ABSTRACT

As a common soil-borne nematode, hookworm is mainly parasitized in the intestine, and the clinical manifestations of hookworm infections mainly include gastrointestinal symptoms and iron-deficiency anemia. In addition, hookworm may be also parasitized in other organs in addition to gastrointestinal system, resulting in development of disorders in other systems. Proteinuria caused by hookworm infections is rare and easy to be misdiagnosed in clinical practices. Hereby, the diagnosis and treatment of a case of proteinuria associated with hookworm infections was reported, in order to increase the understanding of hookworm infection-associated proteinuria among clinicians.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To understand the contents of edible salt iodine and urinary iodine of children and pregnant women in Yunnan Province, and to evaluate the iodine nutrition status, so as to provide a basis for scientific prevention and treatment of iodine deficiency disorders (IDD).Methods:From November to December 2020, one county (city) was selected from each prefecture (city), two townships (towns and streets) were selected from each county (city) and two villages (neighborhood committees) were selected from each township (town and street) from each of the 16 prefectures (cities) in Yunnan Province as the investigation sites. A total of 20 non-boarding children (male and female balanced) aged 8 - 10 years old were selected from each primary school in each village (neighborhood committee) to collect salt and urine samples. A total of 80 children were investigated in each county (city). A total of 20 pregnant women were selected from each township (town and street) to collect salt and urine samples. A total of 40 pregnant women were investigated in each county (city). All salt samples and urine samples were tested for iodine contents. Results:A total of 2 009 salt samples and 2 041 urine samples (1 375 for children, 666 for pregnant women) were collected from children aged 8 - 10 years old and pregnant women in 16 counties (cities) of Yunnan Province. Among them, the median salt iodine was 26.0 mg/kg, the coverage rate of iodized salt was 100.0% (2 009/2 009), the qualified rate of iodized salt was 98.7% (1 982/2 009), and the consumption rate of qualified iodized salt was 98.7% (1 982/2 009). The difference of salt iodine content in key populations in different counties (cities) was statistically significant ( H = 258.98, P < 0.01). The median urinary iodine of children aged 8 - 10 years old was 188.5 μg/L. There was statistically significant difference in urinary iodine content among children of different ages ( H = 29.45, P < 0.01), but there was no statistically significant difference in urinary iodine content among children of different genders ( H = 1.43, P > 0.05). In addition, the median urinary iodine of pregnant women was 141.9 μg/L, 52.1% (347/666) was < 150 μg/L. There was statistically significant difference in urinary iodine content of pregnant women in different counties (cities, H = 88.32, P < 0.01). Conclusions:The qualified rate of iodized salt, the coverage rate of iodized salt and the consumption rate of qualified iodized salt in key populations of Yunnan Province are more than 90%, and the iodized salt supply is good. Iodine nutrition of children aged 8 - 10 years old is at an appropriate level (100 - 199 μg/L); iodine nutrition of pregnant women is in an state of iodine deficiency ( < 150 μg/L). It is suggested to strengthen IDD monitoring and health education among key populations, improve residents' awareness of disease prevention, and make scientific iodine supplementation.

ABSTRACT

Conversion therapy has become the core in the treatment of borderline resectable or unresectable liver cancer, which provides resectable opportunities for more advanced liver cancer patients. In accordance with the first-choice treatment regimen recommended by the guidelines, the authors reported a successful case of Atezolizumab and Bevacizumab (T+A regimen) conversion therapy. The patient with initially borderline resectable advanced liver cancer was performed liver segment resection sucessfully after conversion therapy, and non-tumor recurrence was observed at postoperative 9 months. Postoperative pathological examination showed combined hepatocellular-cholangiocarcinoma, which also indicated the important value of T+A regimen in the conversion therapy of combined hepatocellular-cholangiocarcinoma.

ABSTRACT

ObjectiveTo investigate the effect of Jingangwan on the expression of osteoclast, c-Jun N-terminal kinase(JNK), p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase(p38 MAPK), and interleukin-1(IL-1) in the osteoporosis model rats, explore the mechanism of Jingangwan in the treatment of osteoporosis, and determine the optimal dosing concentration of Jingangwan. MethodFifty-six rats of SPF grade were randomized into a blank group,a sham operation group,a model group, model group,high-, medium-, and low-dose Jingangwan groups (0.72, 0.36, 0.18 g·kg-1·d-1, ig),and an estradiol valerate group (0.009 g·kg-1·d-1, ig), with eight rats in each group. The rats in the model group, the blank group, and the sham operation group received 3 mL of normal saline, respectively. Samples were collected 12 weeks after drug administration. The number of osteoclasts was observed by tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining. Serum levels of JNK, p38 MAPK, and IL-1 were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The mRNA expression levels of p38 MAPK and JNK were detected by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (Real-time PCR). ResultThe TRAP staining results showed that compared with the model group, the estradiol valerate group and the Jingangwan groups could inhibit the formation of osteoclasts to different degrees. As revealed by ELISA results, compared with the model group and the sham operation group, the model group showed increased serum levels of p38 MAPK, JNK, and IL-1 (P<0.01), while compared with the model group, all the groups with drug intervention showed decreased levels of p38 MAPK, JNK, and IL-1 (P<0.01). The serum levels of JNK and IL-1 in the high-dose Jingangwan group were lower than those in the estradiol valerate group (P<0.05). Real-time PCR results showed that compared with the blank group, the model group showed increased relative mRNA expression of p38 MAPK and JNK in the thighbone (P<0.01), while compared with the model group, all the groups with drug intervention showed decreased relative mRNA expression of p38 MAPK and JNK in the thighbone (P<0.01). ConclusionJingangwan can inhibit the formation of osteoblasts, reduce the diameter of the bone marrow cavity, improve bone quality, suppress the production of inflammatory factors, affect the metabolism of the MAPK signaling pathway, and blunt p38 MAPK and JNK activities to inhibit the differentiation and proliferation of osteoblasts and regulate bone metabolism, thereby preventing osteoporosis. Therefore,Jingangwan may be of application value in maintaining bone health and treating osteoporosis.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#Resistance to chemotherapy drugs makes ovarian cancer (OC) difficult to treat and ultimately kills patients. Long non-coding RNAs are closely related to carboplatin resistance in OC. In present study, we explored the role of lncRNA X-inactive specific transcript (XIST) on carboplatin resistance in OC. @*Methods@#Cell viability, proliferation, and apoptosis were assessed through 2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide, colony formation, and flow cytometry assays, respectively. Microtubule-associated protein 1A/1B-light chain 3 expression was evaluated by immunofluorescence assay to analyze the cell autophagy. The interaction of XIST/miR-506-3p or miR-506-3p/forkhead box protein P1 (FOXP1) was analyzed using RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP) and dual-luciferases reporter assays. The function of XIST/miR-506-3p/FOXP1 axis in vivo was further confirmed by tumor xenograft study and immunohistochemistry. @*Results@#The expression of XIST and FOXP1 increased while miR-506-3p decreased in OC and carboplatin resistance cells. XIST silencing repressed the proliferative and autophagic capacities of carboplatin resistance cells while promoted the apoptosis. XIST overexpression led to the opposite results. XIST targeted miR-506-3p and downregulated its expression. MiR-506-3p inhibition facilitated the proliferative and autophagic capacities while suppressed the apoptosis of cells, XIST knockdown reversed these effects. MiR-506-3p bound to FOXP1. XIST knockdown or miR-506-3p overexpression reversed the increase of cell proliferative and autophagic abilities and the decrease of apoptosis rate induced by FOXP1 overexpression. XIST affected autophagy and carboplatin resistance in vivo via regulating the miR-506-3p/FOXP1 axis. @*Conclusion@#XIST knockdown inhibited autophagy and carboplatin resistance of OC through FOXP1/protein kinase B (AKT)/mammalian target of rapamycin pathway by targeting miR-506-3p.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the effect of resveratrol on the expression of inflammatory cytokines and related genes in human SZ95 sebocytes induced by benzo (a) pyrene. Methods:Human SZ95 sebocytes were cultured in vitro, and divided into 4 groups: control group treated with 1‰ dimethyl sulfoxide for 27 hours, resveratrol group treated with 1 × 10 -5 mol/L resveratrol for 24 hours, benzo (a) pyrene group treated with 1 × 10 -5 mol/L benzo (a) pyrene for 3 hours, resveratrol+benzo (a) pyrene group treated with 1 × 10 -5 mol/L resveratrol for 24 hours followed by 1 × 10 -5 mol/L benzo (a) pyrene for 3 hours. Real-time fluorescence-based quantitative PCR was performed to determine the mRNA expression of interleukin (IL) -1α, IL-6, aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) , cytochrome P4501A1 (CYP1A1) and cytochrome P4501B1 (CYP1B1) in SZ95 sebocytes in the above groups; Western blot analysis was conducted to determine the phosphorylation level of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK, expressed as the ratio of phosphorylated to total p38 MAPK) and AhR protein expression; enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was conducted to detect levels of IL-1α and IL-6 in the cell culture supernatant in each group. One-way analysis of variance was used for comparison of means among multiple groups, and least significant difference- t test was used for multiple comparisons. Results:The mRNA and protein expression of IL-1α in SZ95 sebocytes significantly differed among the control group, resveratrol group, benzo (a) pyrene group and resveratrol+benzo (a) pyrene group (mRNA: 2.045 ± 0.272, 2.058 ± 0.154, 3.124 ± 0.094, 2.185 ± 0.337, protein: 9.132 ± 1.181, 9.429 ± 0.771, 20.361 ± 0.907, 9.917 ± 0.897, F=14.662, 101.705, P < 0.01, < 0.001, respectively) , and were significantly lower in the resveratrol+benzo (a) pyrene group than in the benzo (a) pyrene group (both P < 0.01) . In addition, the phosphorylation level of p38 was significantly higher in the benzo (a) pyrene group than in the control group, resveratrol group and resveratrol+benzo (a) pyrene group ( F=303.129, P < 0.000 1) . The mRNA expression of AhR, CYP1A1 and CYP1B1 was significantly lower in the resveratrol+benzo (a) pyrene group than in the benzo (a) pyrene group ( t=10.64, 33.599, 18.327, respectively, all P < 0.001) . The benzo (a) pyrene group showed significantly decreased protein expression of AhR compared with the resveratrol+benzo (a) pyrene group ( P < 0.001) . Conclusion:Resveratrol can inhibit the environmental pollutant benzo (a) pyrene-induced expression of inflammatory factor IL-1α in SZ95 sebocytes, which is likely mediated by the AhR and p38MAPK pathways.

ABSTRACT

To analyze the domestic clinical application of vascular dementia scales, and provide the basis for the refinement of clinical scales. VIP, SinoMed, Wanfang and CNKI databases were searched by computer to analyze the clinical application of vascular dementia scales published in Chinese Core Periodicals in Library of Peking University, CSSCI and CSCD, with time limit from database establishment to August 31, 2020. According to the inclusion or exclusion criteria, the combination of Note Express software and manual search was used to complete the literature duplicate detection and screening. According to the research needs, the relevant data were extracted and a new database was established. In this study, a total of 4 246 related literatures were initially searched, 2 048 repetitive literatures were eliminated, 1 484 literatures were manually screened out, and finally 714 literatures and 44 scales were included. The total using frequency of scales was 2 660. The results of descriptive analysis showed that there were many kinds of clinical scales for vascular dementia. In order to avoid the repeated use of scales with similar functions, it is correct to include the possible influences such as the purpose of use, way, frequency and function of the scales into reference factors of scale selection according to the disease diagnostic criteria. It is necessary to develop the scales with traditional Chinese medicine characteristic for objective clinical evaluation of traditional Chinese medicine.

ABSTRACT

Purpose@#Spontaneous rupture is a potentially serious complication of liver cancer. A risk score was developed and validated for predicting spontaneous rupture based on a retrospective study. @*Methods@#Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to study the relationship between clinical variables and spontaneous rupture. The independent rupture predictors were converted into a score based on the odds ratio. Predicted attributes of the developed scores were then verified using a dataset in 2019. @*Results@#The incidence of spontaneous rupture was 5.5% from 2002 to 2019. A 10-point score (α-FP of ≥400 μg/L, 1; protrusion from liver surface, 2; ascites, 3; tumor size of >5 cm, 4) was derived for prediction of rupture and area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve was 0.9 (95% confidence interval, 0.87–0.92). When applying a cutoff value of 5 points or more, the specificity was 0.87 and the sensitivity was 0.84. A validation cohort consisting of 202 hepatocellular carcinoma patients reproduces the predictive, identification, and calibration characteristics. The observed rate of spontaneous rupture according to risk stratification of the score was 0.6% for those with a score of 0–4, 21.6% for a score of 5–7, and 36.4% for a score of 8–10 in the validation cohort. @*Conclusion@#Here, based on routine clinical data, we determine the factors that affect prognosis and propose an effective tool for predicting spontaneous rupture, which may be useful in guiding priority treatment of high-risk patients or clinical routine preventive treatment.

ABSTRACT

From December 2019, the new coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) broke out in Wuhan, Hubei, and spread rapidly to the nationwide. On January 20, 2020, the National Health Committee classified COVID-19 pneumonia as one of B class infectious diseases and treated it as class A infectious disease. During the epidemic period, the routine diagnosis and treatment of tumor patients was affected with varying degrees. In this special period, we performed the superiority of the multi-disciplinary team of diagnosis and treatment, achieved accurate diagnosis and treatment of patients with hepatobiliary malignant tumors, provided support for these patients with limited medical resources, and helped them to survive during the epidemic period. On the basis of fully understanding the new coronavirus pneumonia, the treatment strategy should be changed timely during the epidemic, and more appropriate treatment methods should be adopted to minimize the adverse effect of the epidemic on tumor treatment.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND@#The purpose of this study was to analyze cases of AO31-A2 intertrochanteric fractures (ITFs) and to identify the relationship between the loss of the posteromedial support and implant failure.@*METHODS@#Three hundred ninety-four patients who underwent operative treatment for ITF from January 2003 to December 2017 were enrolled. Focusing on posteromedial support, the A2 ITFs were divided into two groups, namely, those with (Group A, n = 153) or without (Group B, n = 241) posteromedial support post-operatively, and the failure rates were compared. Based on the final outcomes (failed or not), we allocated all of the patients into two groups: failed (Group C, n = 66) and normal (Group D, n = 328). We separately analyzed each dataset to identify the factors that exhibited statistically significant differences between the groups. In addition, a logistic regression was conducted to identify whether the loss of posteromedial support of A2 ITFs was an independent risk factor for fixation failure. The basic factors were age, sex, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score, side of affected limb, fixation method (intramedullary or extramedullary), time from injury to operation, blood loss, operative time and length of stay.@*RESULTS@#The failure rate of group B (58, 24.07%) was significantly higher than that of group A (8, 5.23%) (χ = 23.814, P < 0.001). Regarding Groups C and D, the comparisons of the fixation method (P = 0.005), operative time (P = 0.001), blood loss (P = 0.002) and length of stay (P = 0.033) showed that the differences were significant. The logistic regression revealed that the loss of posteromedial support was an independent risk factor for implant failure (OR = 5.986, 95% CI: 2.667-13.432) (P < 0.001).@*CONCLUSIONS@#For AO31-A2 ITFs, the loss of posteromedial support was an independent risk factor for fixation failure. Therefore, posteromedial wall reconstruction might be necessary for the effective treatment of A2 fractures that lose posteromedial support.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To explore the correalation between change of postoperative cognitive function and injury of the draining veins around meningiomas in superficial middle cerebral vein areas, to discuss the importance and protection method of draining veins around meningiomas in order to guide the microneurosurgery.@*Methods@#From July 2013 to July 2017, the clinical data of 54 patients with superficial middle cerebral vein areas meningiomas(tumor group) in the Central Hospital of Guangdong Nongken were retrospectively analyzed. And 52 healthy volunteers were selected as the control group. The preoperative and postoperative cognitive function and meningiomas peritumoral edema(MPE) were assessed by the Montreal Cognitive Assessment(MoCA) and CT/MRI.@*Results@#The scores of visuospatial and executive[(3.23±1.27)points], order[(2.52±1.27)points], memory[(2.20±1.14)points], attention[(4.71±0.97)points], language[(2.19±0.74)points], abstract[(1.43±0.63)points], location[(5.83±0.42)points], total[(22.06±0.33)points] in the tumor group were significantly lower than those in the control group[(4.83±0.38)points, (3.0±0.02)points, (3.5±1.04)points, (5.98±0.14)points, (2.54±0.50)points, (1.88±0.38)points, (5.98±0.33)points, (27.83±0.16)points](t=4.504, 6.116, 9.338, 2.782, 4.509, 2.390, 8.670, all P<0.05). According to the injury of the draining veins around meningioma, 54 patients were divided into the two groups, 43 cases in the no-injuried group, 11 cases in the injuried group. There were no statistically significant differences between the no-injuried group and injuried group in all measurements before operation(all P>0.05). Both no-injuried group and injuried group had decline in MoCA and increase in MPE at 5 days after surgery. Both no-injuried group and injuried group had rise in MoCA[(26.35±0.36)points vs.(22.00±0.67)points] and decrease in MPE[(23.95±4.34)cm3 vs (44.64±9.68)cm3] at 30 days after surgery(t=5.944, 2.098, all P<0.05). The MoCA[(22.59±0.31)points vs (26.35±0.36)points] was obviously increased and the MPE[(87.84±12.78)cm3 vs.(23.95±4.34)cm3] was obviously increased in 30 days after operation in no-injuried group(t=7.289, 5.014, all P<0.05), but the injuried group had just the opposite.@*Conclusion@#Injury of the draining veins around meningiomas in superficial middle cerebral vein areas can lead to cognitive dysfunction and compromise the quality of postoperative life in patients, every effort should be undertaken to preserve the draining veins around meningioma.

ABSTRACT

Background@#Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is sensitive to radiotherapy (RT). However, neurocognitive complications such as memory loss and learning and attention deficits emerge in the survivors of NPC who received RT. It remains unclear how radiation affects patient brain function. This pilot study aimed at finding cerebral functional alterations in NPC patients who have received RT.@*Methods@#From September 2014 to December 2016, 42 individuals, including 22 NPC patients and 20 normal volunteer controls in National Cancer Center/National Clinical Research Center for Cancer/Cancer Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, and Peking Union Medical College, were recruited in this study. All patients received resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging scans and neurocognitive tests 1 day before the initiation of RT (baseline) and 1 day after the completion of RT; the 20 normal controls were also subjected to the same scans and tests. The amplitude of the low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) in blood oxygen level-dependent signals and functional connectivity (FC) were used to characterize cerebral functional changes. Independent t test, paired t test, and analysis of variances were used to obtain statistical significance across groups.@*Results@#After RT, NPC patients showed significantly decreased ALFF values in the calcarine sulcus, lingual gyrus, cuneus, and superior occipital gyrus and showed significantly reduced FC mainly in the default mode network (P < 0.05, corrected by AlphaSim). Relative to the controls, ALFF was decreased in the lingual gyrus, calcarine sulcus, cingulate cortex, medial prefrontal gyrus (P < 0.05, corrected by AlphaSim), and FC reduction was found in multiple cerebellar–cerebral regions, including the cerebellum, parahippocampus, hippocampus, fusiform gyrus, inferior frontal gyrus, inferior occipital gyrus, precuneus, and cingulate cortex (P < 0.001, corrected by AlphaSim).@*Conclusions@#Cerebral functional alterations occur immediately after RT. This study may provide an explanation for the cognitive deficits in the morphologically normal-appearing brains of NPC patients after RT and may contribute to the understanding of the complex mechanism of RT.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the skin irritation of essential oils(EOs) extracted from interior-warming medicines. Method:Three EOs from interior-warming medicines(Cinnamomi Cortex, Caryophylli Flos and Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma) were selected as research objects. The in vitro skin cytotoxicity and in vivo skin irritation of these EOs were determined and compared. Moreover, the skin irritation was also predicted by the novel skin test panels. Result:Toxicity of these three EOs to human skin fibroblasts(HSF) was significantly different, half-inhibitory concentration(IC50) values of EOs from Cinnamomi Cortex, Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma and Caryophylli Flos were (11.16±0.28), (53.33±1.71), (226.70±17.61) mg·L-1, respectively. However, in vivo skin irritation evaluation showed that the local toxicity of these three EOs was in the order of EO of Cinnamomi Cortex > EO of Caryophylli Flos > EO of Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma. The evaluation results of skin test panels for these three EOs were in accordance with the results of in vivo skin irritation evaluation. Conclusion:Toxicity of these three EOs against skin cells in vitro is inconsistent with their in vivo skin irritation. Skin test panels are expected to be able to accurately predict in vivo skin irritation of EOs instead of cytotoxicity evaluation.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To evaluate the value of T2WI signal intensity related parameters that can be obtained by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for predicting pathological complete response (pCR) after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) in patients with locally advanved rectal cancer (LARC).@*Methods@#Signal Intensity of Tumor (SIT) and Signal Intensity of Tumor/Muscle (SIT/M) of MR T2WI before and after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy of 101 patients with locally advanced rectal cancer were evaluated by two experienced readers independently. Signal Intensity of Tumor Reduction Rate (SITRR) and Signal Intensity of Tumor/Muscle Reduction Rate (SIT/MRR) were calculated. The difference of related parameters of T2WI tumor signal intensity between the pCR and the non-pCR group were analyzed. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to assess the diagnostic performance for predicting pCR.@*Results@#Of the 101 patients, 18 were in pCR group and 83 were in non-pCR group. In all patients, the SITpre, SITpost, SITRR, SIT/Mpre, SIT/Mpost and SIT/MRR measured by reader 1 were 197.0 (133.0), 144.2 (69.7), 0.4% (0.5%), 2.6 (0.6), 3.0 (2.3) and 0.4 (0.2)% in pCR group, and 227.0 (99.0), 205 (95.4), 0.1% (0.6%), 2.6 (0.6), 2.6 (1) in non-pCR group, respectively. SITpre, SITpost, SITRR, SIT/Mpre, SIT/Mpost and SIT/MRR measured by reader 2 were 193.0 (135.0), 143.0 (69.8), 0.4% (0.2%), 2.6 (0.6), 1.5 (0.5) and 0.39% (0.2%) in pCR group, and 234.0(108.0), 203(96.5), 0.1% (0.3%), 2.6 (0.6%), 1.7 (0.7) and 0.25% (0.2%) in non-pCR group, respectively. Between the pCR and non-pCR group, there were significant differences in SITpost, SIT/Mpost and SIT/MRR measured by both readers (all P<0.01), but there was no significant differences in SITpre and SIT/Mpre (P>0.05). The difference of SITRR measured by reader 1 was not statistically significant (P=0.415), while the difference of SITRR measured by reader 2 was statistically significant (P=0.001). In patients with rectal non-mucinous adenocarcinoma, SITpost, SIT/Mpost, SITRR and SIT/MRR measured by two physicians were still statistically significant between the pCR and non-pCR group (all P<0.01), but SITpre and SIT/Mpre had no significant difference (P>0.05). ROC curve analysis showed that in all patients, the area under curve (AUC) of SITpost, SIT/Mpost and SIT/MRR for predicting pCR to neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy in locally advanced rectal cancer was 0.694-0.762, the sensitivity was 68.2%-77.3%, and the specificity was 63.6%-77.3%. In rectal non-mucinous adenocarcinoma patients, the AUC, sensitivity and specificity was 0.704-0.764, 62.7%-78.9% and 66.2%-84.2%, respectively.@*Conclusions@#T2WI signal intensity related parameters are potential predictors for pCR in locally advanced rectal cancer after neoadjuvant chemoradiptherapy. The predictive value is higher in non-mucinous adenocarcinoma.
